Wine tasting, concert benefit St. Augustine

-A +A

Supporters of St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Rocklin can help the church Sunday by attending the Fall Festival, a food, beer and wine and concert fundraiser.

The fun starts at 4 p.m. at the Blue Goose Event Center in Loomis, where guests can enjoy wine and beer tasting and a catered dinner. The featured wine is from Cielo Estate, with beer from the Loomis Basin Brewery. Dinner will be buffet-style and will feature a gourmet pasta dish.

Event coordinator Jim Quinney said the event has evolved this year from a wine tasting to include a gourmet dinner and music by Derek Thomas, who leads a quartet based in Roseville.

“This kid is pretty remarkable,”?Quinney said of Thom-as, who will perform jazz and soul music at the Fall Festival. “He plays everything from Sinatra to Adele.”

Thomas confirmed that, saying the quartet’s repertoire includes 1950s music, contemporary songs and a mix of originals.

Taking the stage with Thomas will be Nolan Le Vine on drums, Jayson Angove (guitar and piano) and David Albertson on upright bass.

“We’re looking forward to perfoming at a brand-new venue, meeting lots of new people and of course being part of a fundraiser,”?Thomas enthused.

Money raised at the festival will go into the church’s general fund, which is used to support the Gathering Inn and collecting food for the needy, and the church’s ongoing support of a Christian community in Haiti.

“I really feel like we do have an awfully open and loving congregation where we’re all trying to walk down a path together,” Quinney said.

He added that this year is especially exciting for the church because its building project is now fully funded. Currently, parishioners worship in a modular building on seven acres of land the church  owns on Wildcat Boulevard; in a year Quinney expects the church will hold a grand-opening ceremony for its new building.

“We’re a very small parish, but we really get a lot out of our parish,” Quinney said. “I’m very proud of what we accomplish.”
