The Sierra College men’s golf team captured its third straight Northern California Junior College Championship Monday in El Cerrito, defeating Fresno City 728 to 751 at the Par 71, 6,527-yard Mira Vista Country Club. “I'm am very proud and pleased for this team,” said Sierra coach Tim Hovancsek. “They stayed focused and achieved a lofty goal.” Sierra sophomore Kevin Lucas was the overall medalist with rounds of 67 and 70 in the 36-hole Northern California final. His score, along with that of second place finisher Ryan Miller (72-71) helped Sierra post a 23-shot margin of victory of the Rams. Sierra freshmen Kyle Chatelain (73-76) and Eric McIntosh (77-72) also posted strong scores for the Wolverines. “We just stuck to our game plan and didn’t try to do anything to crazy,” said Sierra sophomore AJ Hasegawa, who posted a two-round total of 153 (75-78). “We went into the day confident and we knew how the course was playing. Kevin was awesome and he basically played mistake-free for two rounds.” Santa Rosa (754) finished third to qualify for next week’s state championships while Chabot College (757) edged Cabrillo (756) by one shot to earn the final qualifying spot.
