Woodcreek heads Nourth in win over Whitney
J.J. Nourth scored four of Woodcreek High School’s seven touchdowns in a 52-35 nonleague victory over visiting Whitney on Friday night.
Nourth had an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and scoring runs of six, two and 52 yards to help lead Woodcreek (4-1) to its fourth consecutive win, while Whitney (2-3) struggled to contain the Timberwolves.
“You can’t give up 50 points and expect to win,” Whitney coach Mike Gimenez said.
Whitney had a long possession to start of the game with a 24-yard touchdown run by Connor Graves giving the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.
Woodcreek evened the score on a 14-yard pass from Shaun Mize to Cody Morrison with 3:31 left in the first quarter. The Timberwolves’ defense forced the Wildcats to punt, and Mize threw his second touchdown pass, this one a 35-yarder to Dylan Zuverink with 1:15 to go in the first period.
“I’m real pleased,” Woodcreek coach John Hildebrand said. “It was a total team effort. We’ve got a great squad on special teams. Offense did their job. Our defense played their hearts out.”
Whitney’s offense got something going and Jake Rodrigues found Corey Palin for a 55-yard touchdown pass to pull the Wildcats within 20-14.
Woodcreek returned the favor with 25 unanswered points carrying into the third quarter to take a 45-14 advantage. Nourth scored all three touchdowns and a two-point conversion to go with a Critter Elliott 28-yard field goal.
“They’re obviously a solid team, a really good team,” Gimenez said. “It was a combination of them being a really good team and us not executing. That’s what’s been hurting us in even games we’ve won. We haven’t executed.”
The Wildcats bounced back with two scores in the third quarter, the first on a 13-yard Rodrigues-to-Palin touchdown with 7:49 left.
Woodcreek sneaked in a final touchdown when Mize connected with Brandon Whitebear on an eight-yard pass for a 52-21 lead.
Whitney scored the last two touchdowns. Rodrigues pitched the ball to Isaiah Moore, who rushed five yards for a score with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter.
Rodrigues ran three yards for the final points with under two minutes to play in the game.
Whitney 21, Woodcreek 20 – Vince Fernandez had two one-yard touchdowns and Steve Nogosek had a 40-yard dash to the end zone for the Timberwolves in the loss. Woodcreek missed a field goal with a few seconds left in the game.
