It was a near dream come true but reality has a way of rewarding the fruits of labor with the satisfaction of knowing no effort was too small or disappointment too great. Yuba College, with players from Rocklin and Roseville, earned a spot in the California Community College Athletic Association’s men’s basketball finals. A tremendous accomplishment in spite of falling to perennial powerhouse Fresno City College, 77-62, at Cosumnes River College, March 11; it was the Rams’ third title in six years. Leading the 49’ers was Rocklin’s Cody Kale who scored 14 for the runners up. Former Del Oro player Spencer Butterfield was held to eight points and Roseville’s Kevin Crabb had 11 points and eight rebounds. In spite of the loss, Kale, Butterfield, Crabb, Rocklin’s Anthony Romero had a tremendous season. Romero said it was one they’ll never forget. It wasn’t Yuba College’s best game of the season hitting only two shots from beyond the three-point line and shooting just a little more than 50 percent from the free-throw stripe. Semifinal _ The day before the 49’ers topped Antelope Valley 79-69 to reach the championship game. Butterfield scored 17 in the contest and added 11 boards. Romero added 15 points to the club’s totals and Kale 14. It was the 22nd straight win for the Yuba College cagers. The 49’ers finished the season 33-4 and were the Bay Valley Conference champions. Yuba College is coached by Doug Cornelius.
