Rocklin holds grazing workshop
Staff report

Rocklin is inviting residents, homeowner associations and property managers to a free workshop to learn about the environmental benefits of grazing and how this method of vegetation management can reduce fire hazard on their property. The workshop will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 at the Rocklin Police Station, 4080 Rocklin Road.

To promote an environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional weed abatement methods used on large undeveloped lots and privately owned open space areas, the city of Rocklin is collaborating with the Placer and Nevada County Resource Conservation districts to bring this workshop to Rocklin.

Guest speakers include Roger Ingram, University of California cooperative extension county director and livestock and natural resources advisor, and Tony Fairchild, owner of Goat Brushers, a natural agricultural land-clearing contractor.

Ingram is co-author of “Pasture Primer,” a controlled grazing video course. His university extension program focuses on ranch economics, low-stress livestock handling, water quality and controlled grazing. He also instructs the California Grazing Academy, an intensive, hands-on grazing school he established in 2003.

Fairchild is a regular guest speaker in agricultural programs throughout the region whose experience includes seven years of veterinary practice and five years in feed management and natural and organic pet care product marketing.

Rocklin Fire Department Chief Bill Mikesell and Lisa Osterhold, district manager for the Nevada County Resource Conservation District, will also hold presentations.
