Whitney High’s track and field team seemed very comfortable on its home track during Friday’s Pioneer Valley League finals.
Whitney’s varsity girls placed second while the varsity boys took fourth and the Wildcats had lots of individual stars.
Deja Edwards set a new league record while winning the long jump (18-feet, four-inches) while Kyle Brown placed first in the 300-meter hurdles and teammate Austin Wentworth won the shot put for the Wildcats.
Whitney’s Alyssa Elmont (triple jump), Eric Judd (110 hurdles), Tim Burner (long jump) and John Cardenas (1600) also advanced as individuals to the Sac-Joaquin Section, Division III trials at Modesto Junior College. The trials were Wednesday and the finals are Friday.
Edwards will also compete in the 200 while Brown will compete in the hurdles in Modesto. Whitney also qualified three of its four relay teams for the DIII trials.
Edwards, Brown Teagan LeBeau, Whitney Reaser, Becca O’Neal, Monika Manarang, Casey Ertl and Tina Malek will compete in relay events (4x100 or 4x400) for Whitney’s girls. Both teams set school records at the PVL finals.
Whitney’s Jorden Angel, Burner, Zach Graves and Josh Sarver will compete for Whitney’s boys in the 4x100.
The top finishers from this weekend will advance to the Masters Meet at Hughes Stadium May 22-23.
Rocklin’s track and field team hosted the Sierra Foothill League finals Friday and the Thunder had lots of stars as well.
The Thunder varsity boys took third while the varsity girls were sixth but Rocklin’s junior varsity boys and girls both took first place.
Junior Brendan Lane was the only member of Rocklin’s varsity to win a league title (high jump, 6-2) and he led the Thunder into the DII trials at Bella Vista Wednesday. The finals will be at Bella Vista Friday. The top finishers will advance to the Masters Meet.
Rocklin had seven varsity boys place in the top-8 in at least two events Friday as Ryan Eckert (shot put, second, 51-09.5; discus, third, 138-03), Zachary Zadrozna (1600, third, 4:25.14; 3200, second, 9:44.94), Sam O’Hair (1600, fourth, 4:28. 24; 3200, third, 9:45.48), Josh Carter (100 hurdles, third, 15.75; 300 hurdles, second, 40.3 seconds), David Wallin (100 hurdles, fifth, 16.65; 300 hurdles, fifth, 43.29; high jump, tied eighth, 5-06), Taylor Henry (400, fifth, 52.82; 200, seventh, 24.53) and Cale Simmons (pole vault, third, 14 feet; high jump, tied fifth 5-08) each accomplished the feat.
Robbie Simmons (pole vault, second, 15-07), Eric Boydston (long jump, fourth, 19-08.5) and Josh Bevan (discus, seventh, 121-09) also excelled for Rocklin’s varsity boys.
Samantha Bartels (800, second, 2:19.56), Ruth Bennett (shot put, fourth, 28-03.5; discus, ninth, 76-02), Emily Shields (pole vault, fifth, nine feet), Jen Brothers (discus, fifth, 93-02) and Emily Weinberg (shot put, seventh, 25-07.25; discus, seventh, 78-10) led Rocklin’s varsity girls.
The Thunder claimed nine titles at the JV level. Alex Edwards (800, 1600, 3200) and Garth Keffer (200) claimed individual titles for Rocklin’s JV boys while Keffer, Tyler Green, Zach Helfand and Walter Finney won the 4x100.
Olivia Lane (high jump), Jessica Skalet (1600, 3200), Samantha Bruce (100, long jump) and Kyla Friedrichsmeyer (400) claimed individual titles for Rocklin’s JV girls. The Thunder girls also won the 4x100 (Friedrichsmeyer, Bruce, Jennifer Miyashiro, Maddie Smith) and the 4x400 (Friedrichsmeyer, Bruce, Alex Zamora, Averi Gerberding) at the JV level.
