Girl, 10, escapes abduction attempt
Suspect still on the loose
A 10-year-old girl was able to get away after a man allegedly attempted to grab her at Johnson-Springview Park Monday afternoon. Police are still looking for the suspect, who is described as a black male in his late teens, thin, with spiked hair or dreadlocks. He was wearing all black clothing at the time of the incident. The girl, whose name was not released because she is a minor, was playing at the park when she was approached by the man shortly after 4 p.m., police said. The man allegedly told the girl that he knew her parents and that she should come with him. The girl stepped away from the man and as she did so he attempted to grab her, police said. The girl then ran to her grandmother who was nearby and the two ran quickly to the Rocklin library in the park and notified an employee who then called police. “Police officers conducted an immediate search of the area but did not locate the suspect,” said Lt. Lon Milka of the Rocklin Police Department. Milka said the man was seen fleeing the park on foot in the direction of the skate park. “We have no leads yet,” Milka said. “Nobody has reported anything like this in other areas.” Milka said there has never been an attempted abduction in that park before so it is hard to tell if the man lives nearby or if he came from another area. Rocklin police applauded the girl for running away from the man and suggested parents of young children practice “what if” scenarios with their children. “We encourage kids when they are approached to run away, make noise or draw attention to themselves so people around will know they are in trouble,” Milka said. Milka said outings at the mall or park are opportunities for parents to reinforce these skills so that children will know what to do if they are lost or in danger. “This will give them the tools that will assist them in thinking what they should do in this situation in case somebody tries to grab them,” Milka said. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Rocklin Police Department at 625-5400.
