Rocklin Juniors claim Division II championship
Rocklin Little League’s Junior all-stars worked their way through the loser’s bracket to win the Division II baseball championship in San Jose. Now Rocklin will travel to Aliso Viejo to play in the Western Regionals. Rocklin played Oregon Tuesday and Washington Wednesday and it will battle Montana Friday and Southern California Sunday. The winner of this tournament will play in the Junior Division World Series in Taylor, Mich. Rocklin won its first two games of the DII tournament before losing to Tracy last week. Facing elimination, the Rocklin stars then topped Almaden 4-3 after trailing 3-1. Rocklin tied Almaden in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run double by Tanner McVey. Rocklin’s Michael Blattel led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and JR Robinson followed with a bunt single. Carson Wittwer walked to load the bases and then Sean Kinsella legged out an infield single to win the game with two outs. Gordy Gordon was solid on the mound for Rocklin. Rocklin had to beat Tracy twice in the championship series because Tracy had beat Rocklin earlier in the tournament. Blattel hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning in the first game and Rocklin went on to win 12-2 in six innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. Rocklin’s Zach Green went 3-for-3 with a triple, Blattel was 2-3 and Wittwer was 2-4 with a double. Robinson, Drake Richie, Hayden Hall and Brandon Billings each had base hits as well. Austin Kick pitched a complete game for Rocklin, allowing just three hits. The Rocklin victory forced a game two to decide who would advance to the Aliso Viejo. Rocklin’s bats stayed hot in the deciding game and Rocklin led 11-0 in the fifth inning. Tracy then responded with seven runs in the last of the fifth inning but Rocklin held on to win 11-8. Green (3-5), Blattel (3-4, three doubles), Dillon Buban (2-3) and Robinson (2-4) led Rocklin’s offense. Rocklin’s Wittwer and Robinson both pitched in this championship game.
