Jessup, Antelope meet in Western Regional championship

The William Jessup University baseball team went into Tuesday’s semifinal game to again meet Antelope Valley College facing elimination from the NAIA Western Regional Tournament Wednesday at McBean Stadium.

Shaking off their earlier 4-3 loss to the Pioneers, the Warriors used solid pitching and timely hitting to defeat AVC 6-1. With the win the two teams meet again at noon Thursday to decide the Western Regional championship.

Tied 1-1 after two innings of play, Jessup’s Joe Starick doubled to drive in the winning run in the fifth inning. From that point, the Warriors added runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to hand the Pioneers their first loss of the tournament.

Former Rocklin High player Sam Curtis pitched six innings, giving up three hits and striking out 10. Danny Vietti came on to close, surrendering two hits and striking out two.

Besides Starick’s RBI double, others getting hits were Will Law (2-3, 3hits, run, RBI), Steve Pastora (HR, 2runs, RBI), Connor Braun (2b, RBI), Joshua Duitsman (1b, run), Kawaiola Takemura (HR, run, RBI) and Andrew Shaps (run).
